The Best Time to Visit La Jolla, California

One of the most common questions we hear from guests planning a trip to La Jolla is: when is the best time to visit? The honest answer is that La Jolla is genuinely good year-round — the weather is famously mild, the beaches are always accessible, and the restaurants are always open. But each season brings something different, and understanding those differences will help you plan the trip that's right for you.

Summer (June–August) — Peak Season

Summer is La Jolla's busiest season, and for obvious reasons. The weather is warm and sunny, the water is at its warmest (averaging around 68–72°F), and the beaches are at their most vibrant. Snorkeling visibility is excellent in late summer, and the sea caves are at their most accessible. The downside: crowds are at their peak, parking near the Cove is extremely difficult on weekends, and restaurant reservations need to be made well in advance. June Gloom — a marine layer that keeps mornings overcast — is a real phenomenon in early summer, typically burning off by noon. If you're coming in summer, book early and plan to arrive at beaches before 9 AM on weekends.

Fall (September–November) — Our Favorite Season

Fall is, in our opinion, the best time to visit La Jolla. The summer crowds have thinned, but the weather remains warm and sunny — September and October are often the warmest and clearest months of the year. Water temperatures are at their peak, snorkeling visibility is excellent, and the restaurants are easier to get into. The light in fall is particularly beautiful — golden and warm in a way that makes everything look better. If you have flexibility in your travel dates, September through mid-November is the sweet spot.

Winter (December–February) — Quiet Season

Winter in La Jolla is mild by any standard — average high temperatures in the mid-60s, occasional rain, and significantly fewer tourists. The beaches are quieter, the restaurants are easier to get into, and the overall pace of the village slows down in a way that many guests find appealing. December through February is harbor seal pup season at Children's Pool, which is one of the most remarkable wildlife experiences in Southern California. The water is colder (averaging around 58–62°F), so swimming is best left to wetsuits, but the scenery is just as beautiful.

Spring (March–May) — Shoulder Season

Spring brings warming temperatures, blooming wildflowers on the coastal bluffs, and the gradual return of visitors. March and April are still relatively quiet, with good weather and manageable crowds. May marks the beginning of June Gloom season, with morning marine layers that can linger into the early afternoon. Spring is a good time for families visiting during spring break (March) and for guests who want good weather without peak-season crowds.

Practical Considerations

La Jolla's weather is consistently mild enough that the 'worst' months are still better than most destinations' best months. The main variables are crowds, water temperature, and the marine layer. For the best combination of good weather, warm water, and manageable crowds, aim for September or October. For the best value and the most peaceful experience, consider January or February — the harbor seals are a bonus.
