La Jolla has one of the most concentrated and consistently excellent dining scenes of any coastal neighborhood in California. From celebrated fine dining with ocean views to the kind of casual taco spot that locals have been going to for decades, the village and its surroundings offer something for every appetite and occasion. Here's our honest guide to where we actually eat.
George's at the Cove — The Institution
George's at the Cove has defined La Jolla dining for over four decades. Spread across three levels — California Modern, the Bar, and the Ocean Terrace — it offers different experiences depending on what you're looking for. The Ocean Terrace rooftop is the most iconic: open-air, with sweeping views of the Cove and the Pacific, and a menu of California coastal cuisine that manages to feel both celebratory and approachable. Reserve well in advance for weekend evenings. The California Modern downstairs is more formal and equally excellent for a special occasion.
Herringbone — For a Special Evening
Herringbone is our recommendation when you want to feel like you're somewhere truly special. The space is stunning — vaulted ceilings, a living wall of plants, warm lighting — and the seafood-forward menu is consistently excellent. The happy hour at the bar is one of La Jolla's best-kept secrets: excellent cocktails, half-price oysters, and a crowd that's more local than tourist. It's on Prospect Street, which makes it easy to combine with a walk through the gallery district.
Puesto — Best Fish Tacos in the Village
Puesto on Prospect Street does the best fish tacos in La Jolla, and that's a competitive category in San Diego. The al pastor is excellent, the guacamole is made to order, and the patio is one of the best people-watching spots in the village. Go for lunch. The wait for a table can be long on weekends, but the bar usually has seats and the margaritas are worth it.
The Cottage — Breakfast Belongs Here
The Cottage has been on Fay Avenue since 1975 and shows no signs of slowing down. It's the kind of place that has regulars who have been coming for thirty years, and for good reason. The lemon ricotta pancakes are legendary. The eggs Benedict is excellent. The garden patio is one of the most pleasant places to have breakfast in San Diego. The line on weekend mornings is real — arrive before 9 AM or be prepared to wait. It's worth it.
Whisknladle — The Neighborhood Favorite
Whisknladle is the restaurant that locals recommend when visitors ask where to eat without the tourist markup. The menu changes seasonally, the cocktails are creative, and the room has a warmth that the more famous spots sometimes lack. It's on Prospect Street, which means it's easy to walk to from most of our properties. Make a reservation — it fills up.
A Few More Worth Knowing
Pannikin Coffee & Tea on Girard Avenue is La Jolla's best coffee shop — a local institution since 1968, housed in a converted Victorian cottage with an outdoor garden that's perfect for a slow morning. For a casual dinner with excellent pizza, Piatti on Prospect is reliable and unpretentious. For sushi, Zenbu on Pearl Street in Bird Rock is consistently excellent and a favorite among locals.
La Jolla's dining scene rewards the guest who does a little research and books ahead. All of our Scarella Stays properties are within easy walking distance of the village, which means the best restaurants in La Jolla are never more than a short walk away.
